Spiritual Books: Recommendations for Seekers

Many wonderful spiritual books can be found to guide you on your path.

The ancient texts from the world's wisdom traditions offer timeless guidance.  These texts include:
  • The Bible
  • The Torah
  • The Koran
  • The Bhagavad Gita
  • The Dhammapada
  • The Upanishads
  • The Tao Te Ching
  • The Analects of Confucius
  • And many others from traditions around the world
These texts aside, I want to share with you some of my favorites.

Meditations, by Marcus Aurelius
  • Insights from the Emperor Sage Marcus Aurelius about living well and man's place in the universe.
The Prophet, by Khalil Gibran
  • Beautiful poems told in story form about God, love, life, death, suffering, joy, and other subjects.

Mindfulness in Plain English, by Bhante Gunaratana
  • An introduction to mindfulness meditation and the practice of mindfulness.
The Meditative Mind, by Daniel Goleman
  • An introduction to and overview of 16 types of meditation from many traditions around the world.

  • A story of a man following his own path to seek truth and happiness

The Gift, by Hafiz, Translated by Daniel Ladinsky
  • Beautiful poems by Hafiz, the 14th century Sufi poet.  Many are love poems from and to God.
The Soul of Rumi, by Rumi, Translated by Coleman Barks
  • Beautiful poems by Rumi, a 13th century Sufi poet.  Barks also has many other collections of these wonderful poems.

  • Overview of Ken Wilber's Theory of Integral Adult Development, and a roadmap for building spiritual practices into your life.  Many practical exercises.
Eight Mindful Steps to Happiness, by Bhante Gunaratana
  • Clearly discusses Buddhism's Four Noble Truths and the 8 steps that bring happiness:  skillful understanding, thinking, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration. 

Teachings

A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle. 
  • A clear, plain English presentation of insights about awakening.  Addresses both the ocean and wave aspects of our existence.
The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle
  • Tolle's first book.   Emphasizes presence and living in the NOW, our only point of connection to "what is."
Stillness Speaks, by Eckhart Tolle
  • Short, sutra-like teachings about the wisdom and truth to be found in stillness and silence.
My Secret is Silence, by Adyashanti
  • Poetry and short discussions on waking up, Truth, and accepting what is.
The Impact of Awakening
  • A collection of satsang - question and answer - dialogues with Adyashanti on enlightenment.
A Course in Miracles
  • Told from a Christian perspective, a text and daily practices in acceptance, forgiveness, and awakening to Truth.
