Self Improvement Techniques: Recommendations for the Most Effective
Many wonderful self improvement techniques exist and many can take you far. On the other hand, some approaches simply don't work, and some can actually harm you. Below, I'll share the most important techniques and strategies that I recommend as a professional coach. I have found these to be extremely helpful both in my own growth and with my clients. Become a Learner Adopting a learning mindset and "learning how to learn" - from experience, from others, and from the world - is by far the single greatest thing you can do to accelerate your journey of personal growth. It's not really a self improvement technique; it's a mindset shift but it is the foundation for all approaches and techniques. You can do all the practices in the world but if you cannot learn from them you will not change or grow. Clarify Your Desired Outcome Why are you looking for self improvement techniques? What do you want to accomplish? What do you want to bring into your life? The clearer the intention, the better the result. Use visualization, write it down, and tell it to someone. Be crystal clear about what you want. Click here for a full discussion of goal setting. Make a Plan A focused personal growth plan can help you focus your time, resources, and hard work. Build in measures of success, milestones, and needed resources and support to help you stay on track. As my father-in-law always says, "Remember the Ps: Proper Prior Planning Prevents Pretty Poor Performance." Adopt a Daily Practice Consistent, daily practice will build amazing results over time. Short bursts of energy with no follow up, on the other hand, will yield little. Many self improvement techniques make great daily practices. Here are a few excellent ones: - Journaling
- Meditation
- Prayer
- Reading
- Yoga
- Exercise
- Martial Arts
- Daily and weekly planning
- Visualizations
- Affirmations
- Self-Hypnosis
- Designated time with people you love
Learn Time Management Effective time management is really life management. Without proactive planning, self improvement techniques and other important growth practices do not happen. They get pushed away by urgent (but rarely important) matters. Learn time management techniques to proactively make your growth efforts a priority. Grow Holistically Whatever techniques and approaches you employ, seek to grow holistically. By holistically growth, I mean growing in a way that integrates your mind, body, and soul. Well rounded growth will make sustainable change more likely, and will leave you feeling more fulfilled. Exercise and Eat Right Exercise and proper diet are self improvement techniques in their own right, but they also help build the foundation for implementing other approaches. Quite literally, diet and nutrition form the metabolic foundation on which all your other efforts are built. If you feel healthier, stronger, more confident, and clearer of mind your chances of success soar. Cultivate Self Awareness Increasing self awareness and the way we "show up" in the world can improve the effectiveness of any self-improvement technique. Consider keeping a journal, undergoing a personality assessment, and getting feedback from those close to you. Then, learn to digest it and use it for your growth and development. Learn the Maps of Adult Development The world's wisdom traditions and Western developmental psychologists have mapped out the process of adult growth and development. These maps can be helpful in determining what is "just around the corner" for you and identifying approaches to get there. Adopt a Spiritual Practice Spiritual practices develop you from the inside out. In contrast to so many self improvement approaches that focus on getting somewhere, spiritual practices bring out the best in you and transform the way you view the world and those in it. Tap into Your Creativity Everyone can be creative. Sometimes we just let it get buried. Learn to tap into your creativity and access deeper, richer, more holistic parts of your brain. Discipline No discussion of self improvement techniques is complete with out discussing discipline. Passion and motivation are important, but discipline can keep you going even if passion and motivation wane. Build your "discipline muscles" by keeping commitments you make to yourself and others. Also, build in support structures to help keep you accountable. Support Don't be afraid to ask for help. Whether it's a sharing your progress with a relative, having a friend keep you accountable, or working with a professional coach to help you have insights and take action, enlist some help. Support and reinforcement can help you build consistency as you implement your approaches and practices. Good luck.
