My Top 10 Favorite Self Improvement Resources and Recommendations Favorite Classic Book: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and The 8th Habit by Stephen Covey. - Although these books were written almost 30 years ago, they draw upon an extensive review of personal success literature and present timeless, classic advice for developing yourself from the inside out.
Favorite Overall Book about Personal Growth: Integral Life Practice by Ken Wilber, Terry Patten, Adam Leonard, and Marco Morelli. - This book contains an easily digestible overview of Wilber's Integral Theory of adult development. It provides a comprehensive roadmap and specific practices for growing holistically.
Favorite Book on Happiness: Authentic Happiness by Martin Seligmann. - An entertaining and inspiring introduction to the field of positive psychology - the branch of psychology devoted to studying human flourishing, joy, and happiness.
Favorite Book on Using Your Strengths: It's a tie here between Strengthsfinder 2.0 by Tom Rath and Go Put Your Strengths to Work by Marcus Buckingham. Favorite Type of Meditation: Many wonderful types of meditation exist. I personally am a big fan of mindfulness meditation, loving-kindness meditation, heartmath, and natural meditation. - For instructions in these four types of meditation and links to more resources, please visit my meditation page.
Favorite Spiritual Books: Setting the world's ancient wisdom texts aside . . .my personal favorite spiritual books are A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle and The Gift, a collection of poems by Hafiz translated by Daniel Ladinsky. - Both of these texts serve as pointers to spiritual insights and remind us of the divine everywhere. Eckhart speaks in plain English and Hafiz, a 13th century Sufi writer, speaks in playful beautiful poetry.
Favorite Workout Routine: Crossfit - Crossfit is a functional fitness program that combines weightlifting, gymnastic, plyometrics, running, jumping, rope climbing, kettlebells and other fitness challenges for an intense and effective workout. With many of these resources, I refrain from proclaiming "the best" and instead point to many that I think are good. Crossfit is different. I think it is hands down the best fitness training regime around. Click here for a more complete discussion of Crossfit as one of my favorite self improvement resources.
Favorite Diet and Nutrition Plan: Paleo Diet using Zone Principles - On the Paleo diet, you eat like a caveman: "Meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar" and avoid processed foods. Zone principles prescribe eating some protein, some good carbs, and some good fats at each and every meal.
Favorite Time Management Resources: A combination of the following three time management books: - The Power of Full Engagement, by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz. Discusses managing your energy, not your time.
- First Things First, by Stephen Covey. Discusses managing priorities.
- Getting Things Done, by David Allan. Discuss managing to do items, task list, emails.
Favorite Website: Integral Life - This website has a TON of great information from Eastern and Western thinkers about the stages of personal growth and personal growth practices. It features articles, videos, and webcasts. Some content is free; some is available with a $15 monthly subscription.
