Understanding Life Coaching Fees
When examining different coaching options, it can be frustrating to compare life coaching fees for different vendors. Frequently it's like comparing apples and oranges. Some coaches use hourly rates, some use monthly rates, and some use a flat rate for a 6, 9,or 12 month engagement. Here are a few thoughts on life coaching fees, the different ways coaches structure their engagements, and how to get the most out of your coaching experience: Hourly Rates Vary: Coaching rates for life coaching range from $50/hr to more than $500/hr. The average rate for life coaching services hovers around about $150/hr. The price varies depending on level of education, level of experience, type of coaching, and, frankly, how good of a marketer the coach is. Some great coaches underprice their services; some poor coaches with sales backgrounds have great marketing operations. Most Coaches Use Monthly Engagements: Although I just mentioned the hourly rates, the majority of coaching engagements are actually structured on a monthly basis. Clients usually purchase a monthly package or a package for several months. These usually include several coaching sessions, email support, and just-in-time phone support. Monthly engagements help both the coach and the client. They help clients maintain momentum and keep their commitments to themselves (since they've already paid). It helps the coach because the administration/invoicing requires much less time, effort, and money than hourly rates. Commit at Least 4 to 12 Months: Most coaching engagements last somewhere between 4 months and 1 year. Lasting behavior change usually takes at least several months to occur, and then several more months to solidify. If you stop before then you may revert to old behaviors, and then you will have wasted time and money. That said, after about a year it's probably time to begin wrapping it up. Ideally, the coach works to build your capability to think clearly, set goals, identify solutions, and then take action; the coach should never become a crutch for you. If you've been working with a coach for more than a year and a half, the engagement has likely gone on too long, in my opinion. Identify Your Return On Investment (ROI): In business coaching (which is where I began coaching), the return on investment on coaching is the Holy Grail. Everyone's looking for it, although it's quite difficult to determine accurately. Studies of coaching ROI in business settings demonstrate an ROI between 500-700%. Because those numbers are so high, they hardly seem credible; so most corporate coaches identify the return on investment around at least 100%. In life coaching, return on investment from life coaching fees is a personal matter. How much is creating a life you love worth to you? What about changing to a career you're passionate about? What about more time with your spouse and kids? What about improving your health, which may add years to your life? These are personal questions and you should consider them thoughtfully. Because after all is said and done, most coaching engagements wind up costing somewhere between $3500-$6000. That's about the cost of a weeklong training program, a week of vacation, or a week of massages. Although the cost is similar, coaching provides more lasting benefits because it provides support over time. In large training programs, you tend to leave feeling jazzed up but fizzle several weeks later. Coaching instead provides a stable amount of support over a defined period of time, so you dramatically increase your odds of lasting behavior change. I hope that information about various life coaching fees and engagement structures helps.
