Wisdom traditions around the world have long known used meditation for spiritual transformation. In addition, Western developmental psychologists have confirmed that regular meditation dramatically speeds your progression through the stages of adult development, as it changes your worldview and helps you grow from the inside out. How much meditation is needed to achieve these wonderful effects? If you're just beginning, start small and work up to longer sitting periods. Just as you wouldn't begin a running routine by running 26 miles on the first day, you'll want to begin slowly and build up. Begin at 5-10 minutes once a day, then increase it to twice a day. Then, work up until you can do two 20-30 periods of meditation twice a day. That is the amount recommended for lay people. Research by Heartmath has shown that just a minute of practicing the heartmath meditation technique can begin to alter hormone levels and shift mood. In addition to medical science, yogic science claims powerful effects of meditation begin after only several minutes and increase as you continue. Yogi Bhajan, a teacher of Kundalini Yoga and author the Acquarian Teacher Manual, cites specific lengths of time needed for certain desired effects during meditation: - 3 minutes of meditation affects the electromagnetic field, circulation and stability of the blood.
- 11 minutes of meditation begins to change the nerves and glandular system.
- 22 minutes of meditation balances the positive, negative and neutral mind as they begin to work together.
- 31 minutes of meditation allows the glands, breath, and concentration to affect all the cells and rhythms of the body.
- 62 minutes changes the gray matter in the brain. The subconscious and the outer projection are integrated.
- 2 1/2 hours changes the psyche in its co-relation with the surrounding magnetic field so that the subconscious mind is held firmly in the new pattern by the surrounding universal mind.
(Note: Many monks meditate for several hours a day. Unless you are at a retreat setting, I would not recommend this. Similar to exercise, unless you work up to this and regularly train for it, you can overheat your system and cause problems.)
