Choosing Simplicity: The Benefits
For You, Others, and The World

In other articles on this site I discuss the power of choosing simplicity and offer tips for moving beyond hectic complexity into the richness of simplicity.

On this page, I'd simply like to list the benefits of simplicity for yourself, others, and the world. By choosing simplicity, you bring amazing things into your life that no amount of money, stuff, or activities could ever bring.

As you read this page, remember: living simplicity does not mean you have to become a poor, ascetic wanderer.

Rather, it simply means freeing yourself from the slavish desire for "more, more, more." It means learning to focus on the most important things and ignore the rest.

Cheers,
Adam

How Choosing Simplicity Benefits You

Improved physical health, as you decrease stress, learn to enjoy real foods, and devote time to exercise.

Improved psychological health, as you let go of mental clutter and things draining your most precious resource - attention. A clear mind brings great happiness.

Improved spiritual health, as you learn to ignore distractions and spend more time focusing on the divine with yourself, others, and the world.

Comfortable Physical Environment, as closets, attics, and garages full of crap give way to a neatly organized collection of necessities and a feeling of "lightness.

Free Time, to spend with friends and family or in activities you truly enjoy.

Personal Growth, as a clear mind allows you to see things as they really are, to see yourself as you really are, and to devote time to your development.

Fulfilling Work, as reducing your need for stuff and your debt allows you to escape the golden handcuffs and take risks to pursue work that fulfills you.

Enjoyment of the Present Moment, as you learn to eliminate mental clutter and focus on the present moment, which is all you really have.

Feeling of Fulfillment, as you enjoy each moment deeply and devote your time to that most important to you.

New Opportunities, as you create a literal and figurative space in your life for new opportunities to arise. (How could they come when you're too busy to even see them?)

Ability to Travel, as less material stuff allows you to quickly and easily move from place to place.

And, finally, Tax Deductions, since hey, giving stuff away really adds up!

How Choosing Simplicity Benefits Others

Richer Relationships, as you can devote time to building relationships and are able to be truly present (i.e. not distracted) with those you're with.

More Impact, as attention and time allow you to truly connect with others.

More Support, as the less needy you are, the more you can help and support others.

How Choosing Simple Living Benefits The World

Preservation of Environmental Resources, as less demand creates less need to use resources for production. Remember, every dollar you spend is a vote for or against something.

Social Justice, as living simply lessens the demand for resources, which often are the central object of social, national, and international discord.

A Saner World, as we all stop going-going-going" and learn to live more peacefully.

I hope you've enjoyed this discussion of the benefits of choosing simplicity. Please be sure to check out my the 8 Tips for Simple Living and Quotes on Simplicity.

Good luck.
